"Revisit the Red Car"  Update
Revisit the Red Car
On September 10th, 2004 Friends of Atwater Village
had our first fundraising event “Revisit the Red Car” at
the Los Angeles River Center. It was a wonderful warm
evening and neighbors, friends and history buffs
enjoyed the lovely gardens of the River Center while
sipping their favorite beverage and dining on delicious
fare provided by Netty’s. During that time guests
enjoyed bidding on silent auction items that ranged
from framed photos of the red car to “Some Like it Red”
bottles of wine provided by the Red Car Wine Co to
books on the Pacific Electric Railway.
After enjoying the beautiful gardens and the starry skies everyone went into the California Building to view the
documentary “This was the Pacific Electric” by Sky City Productions. After the film we were very fortunate to have the
opportunity to chat with the film makers Thom Eberhardt and Christy Vazquez and Rail Historians Harold Stewart, Ralph
Cantos and Jack Finn.
Our fundraising profits will act as seed money for a
mural we plan to place on one of the original support
structures of the Red Car Line as it crossed the Los
Angeles River onto Glendale Blvd in Atwater Village. To
help fund this project we will be applying for a
Neighborhood Matching Funds Grant through the City
of Los Angeles, Board of Public Works, Operation
Clean Sweep. A portion of the money we have received
as donations will be used to repair and maintain several
of our previous community projects funded through the
Neighborhood Matching Fund program.
