"Atwater Ave. Parent-Teacher Association was ably represented at the recent annual convention of the California Congress of Parents and Teachers held in San Jose, by four enthusiastic delegates.
Mesdames Harry Stover, Harley Roche, Charles Pons and Melvin La Bare made the trip and report an interesting and inspiring week.
The convention opened officially on Tuesday, April 28 in the new San Jose auditorium. General Sessions were held in the mornings and in the afternoons conferences pertaining to some phase of parent-teacher work.
Mrs. Pons and Mrs. Roche attended the Press breakfast and enjoyed a splendid program depicting the editing of the “Convention News.”
San Jose schools, both elementary and high schools were represented on the programs, on of the most outstanding being a "Gay Nineties" skit done in costum with songs and dances of that period."
"The delegates from Atwater were most were most fortunate in not having to stay in the Pullman City, as they were invited to spend the week at the home of Mrs. Roche’s aunt. Rumor has it that she even gave them chicken dinners; anyway the effects of mal-nutrition were not visible on their return.
Aside from the work which is a necessary part of such a convention the delegates report a god time socially, and they returned home with new enthusiasm and plans with which to carry on next year.
Judging from the many things on the calendar, this month will be on of the busiest of the year for the members of the Atwater Ave. Parent-Teacher Association.
May 21 is the date of the annual open house of the school and many interesting exhibits made by the children will be shown. In conjunction with the open house the Parent-Teacher group will serve a spaghetti dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 in the school cafeteria. Mrs. Frank Starr, hospitality chairman for the association will be in charge.
In order to raise money for the children’s parties to be given by the Fathers Council, Mr. and Mrs. M.W. La Bare will open their new home on Garden Avenue for an evening bridge party on May 26, at 8pm.
Lovely prizes and refreshments are planned for this occasion, for the small sum of twenty-five cents.
On Thursday May 26, Mrs. R.H. Behrens, 3243 La Clede will serve a waffle breakfast in the garden at her home. The time is 10:30am and the breakfast will be followed by bridge. Please make reservations by calling Mrs. Behrens Normandy 7788.
The fame of the Bowery Tap Dance given by eight women at the PTA benefit show a year ago seems to have spread throughout the city. A request has come for this number to be presented at the annual banquet given by Los Angeles Tenth District Congress of Parents and Teachers, which will be held in the Biltmore Bowl on May 29.
Mrs. R.H. Behrens, music chairman of the Atwater Association announces that the Mothers Chorus of that group has reorganized under the direction of Mrs. S.B. Bellinger and rehearsals will be held at the home of Mrs. Bellinger and rehearsal will be held at the home of Mrs. Bellinger 3429 Garden Ave on Tuesday mornings from 10-11:30. Anyone who lines to sing and can read music will be welcomed."
